INTERNATIONAL INTRODUCTORY COURSE TO LAND STEWARDSHIP: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

15 September - 30 October 2014

The course is addressed to students and graduates on different areas of knowledge; volunteers and professionals in areas relates to landscape and nature management; staff and volunteers from nature conservation NGO’s; personal from conservation public agencies, social entrepreneurs in rural areas and people interested on land stewardship and the conservation of nature and biodiversity.

The course is structured in 3 modules and combines theory and practice exercises, as well as a final debate after the end of each module in which students could discuss about learning acquired during the course and the role of land stewardship in the management and conservation of nature and biodiversity.

 

PROGRAMME

 

FIRST MODULE: LAND STEWARDSHIP’S PRINCIPLES AND STAKEHOLDERS

1.1. The basic concepts of land stewardship

1.2. Thematic approaches to stewardship: marine, freshwater, agricultural, urban, youth...

1.3. Alliances and main stakeholders for land stewardship

 

SECOND MODULE: LAND STEWARDSHIP AGREEMENTS: PROCEDURES AND QUALITY

2.1. How to develop a land stewardship agreement. Basic procedures

2.2. Legal options and mechanisms for land stewardship. Implementation in specific legal frameworks.

2.3. Monitoring and evaluating land stewardship agreements.

 

THIRD MODULE: STRATEGIES AND TOOLS FOR LAND STEWARDSHIP

3.1. Financing land stewardship

3.2. Communicating land stewardship

3.3. Complementary tools for land stewardship

 

FINAL DEBATE: LEARNINGS and LS PROSPECTIVE

Debating the learnings & the future of land stewardship in your region.

 

 

 

Teachers

Xavier Basora ecoturista quadrat

Xavier Basora: Environmental consultant specialising in communication, land stewardship and ecotourism, issues on which he lectures in several seminars and postgraduate courses. He also collaborates with various magazines and media specialised in nature and landscape. Environmental scientist (UAB, 2001), journalist (UPF, 2007) and postgraduate in protected areas (2002).

Xavier Sabaté: Environmental consultant specialising in public participation and civic engagement in environmental and landscape planning, and Director of a Postgraduate course on Environmental Awareness, in Barcelona (IUSC-UB). Environmental scientist (UAB, 2001), postgraduate in protected areas (2002) and DEA (Master) in physical geography (UdG, 2009).  

 

During more than 12 years of professional activity in Espai TReS · Land and Social Responsibility, both Xavier Basora and Xavier Sabaté have been devoted to the sensibilisation and empowerment of groups and public bodies to enhance environmental conservation. Since 2002, they have helped promote land stewardship in Catalonia and Spain, and have written several publications and participated in various seminars, training courses and other events to share their expertise in land stewardship. Noteworthy, they are co-authors of the European Land stewardship Manual “Caring together for Nature”.  

 

Activities

The course combines theory and practical exercises (see “programme” section). The activities that students will develop include:

- Presentation of case studies of real land stewardship agreements;

- Design of a stewardship agreement;

- Analysis of stewardship tools;

- Analysis of communication experiences;

- Analysis of funding opportunities for land stewardship.

Virtual forum

An online virtual forum will be set up for discussions and exchanges among students, related to the content of the course. The forum will be moderated by the teachers of the course, who will propose topics for discussion and help focus the contributions of students on subjects relevant to the course.

When the students have questions or want to discuss certain issues, they can also contact the teachers by email during the course.
